Julian Selig Amkraut
Julian Selig Amkraut was born on September 29, 1940 in Brooklyn, NY. He was named for his paternal grandmother, Julia Bellison, who died when his father was a young boy (and for Julia's father - Selig Bellison).
He graduated from Midwood High School and Columbia University where he was an anthropology major. While at Columbia, he was a member of the varsity football and track teams. During summers at Cejwin Camps, he met Ruth Greenwald and they married on Thanksgiving, November 25, 1965 in Huntington, Long Island, NY. Over their 22 years together, they had four children; Eric, Brian, Daniel and Fran. Julian truely loved being both a husband and a father.
After Ruth's untimely death from cancer in 1988, he dated and later married Naomi Schindler. The ceremony was held at Rutgers University's Eagleton Institute in New Brunswick, NJ on September 30, 1990 with his children at his side.
Julian worked in emplyee relations and personnel management for a number of companies and institutions, including Continental Can, Interstate Stores, Coney Island Hosptial, Mount Sinai Hospital of Cleveland, Ohio, The Miriam Hospital of Providence, Rhode Island, and Rutgers University, New Brunswick, New Jersey. In his spare time, he worked as an official for high school, college and semi-pro football (in New York, Ohio, Rhode Island and later again in New York - this time along side his son, Eric) as well as high school basketball in Pittsburgh, PA. During the summers, Julian would come to Cejwin to join his wife, Ruth, and his children over the weekends. There, he would lend his talents often leading groups of campers on canoe trips down the Delaware River.
Julian's dream was to retire to a home that backed on a river in the Port Jervis, NY area. Sadly, he did not realize this goal. Julian S. Amkraut died at home in East Brunswick, NJ on October 6, 1990 after suffering a massive heart attack while preparing to officiate a PSAL high school football game.
